Moments-Central and Raw Moments- Mean, kurtosis, Variance and Skewness

Image
Data are information collected from various sources in various forms. These data are analyzed to get meaningful conclusion and insights about the dataset. A single datum is hardly useful. We usually require a dataset consisting a series of datapoints to carry out any analysis or get to a conclusion. This series of datapoint traces the path on which the variable under consideration moves. This traced path can be very useful to understand the pattern of the data and also predicts its future movement. To understand the pattern, we need to consider certain characteristics of the path. The points when plotted on graph paper, the traced path takes the form of a curve. And the characteristics of the path such as mean, variance, kurtosis and skewness can be found out using moments. These are two types of moments- raw and central. Central moment measures the deviation of datapoints from mean. Whereas, raw moment measures the deviation of datapoints from 0.   The 1 st order raw momen...

Data Classification

Image
‘Data are information collected about individuals, objects, places etc. Any sort of information is called data. Information can be numerical, words, sentences etc. Information when collected are not always available in useable form especially if collector and analyst are different. They need to be classified first in order to carry out further steps. Data classification is a methodology where heterogeneous data are put into homogeneous groups based upon some common characteristics. These groups are known as class. For example- Gender, age-groups etc…Data are classified so that their similarities and differences can be easily detected. Vast amount of data can be easily analyzed once they are classified into smaller groups making the comparison easier. There are major four fields based on which data classification is done: a.        Geographical Classification: In this classification method, data are classified based on their geograph...

STORY TELLING WITH STATISTICS

Image
As fascinating as numbers are to some people, they appear as nightmares to many . Before a mathematics or statistics exam or before presenting something with statistical analysis we often become anxious which makes it all messed up for us, messing all our hard work and preparations. But are numbers really that scary? Is statistics that scary? Or is statistics just scary numbers? Let me tell you what, statistics is not just numbers but ‘story telling numbers.’ This is the magical power that statistics possess. Numbers by themselves are just numbers that we have already learnt in our prep days, but statistics provides voice to those numbers so that they can tell their own stories.   We are all well acquainted with the story that we often make fun of while exaggerating them a bit- Our fathers' famous tale about how they have climbed mountains, swam across oceans, walked through deserts to reach their schools. As over overexaggerated those stories are they are something we remem...

WHY STATISTICS?

Image
What does Statistics do?  Statistics is a way which helps us to make decisions, predictions and interpretations. Why Statistics? "Why Statistics? I got it , I am a born Statistician and that much is necessary for my daily life, why do I need to know Statistics or anybody else should?" Have these questions ever stuck your mind? Have you ever questioned this when you see all this craze about data scientist, data analyst, statistical analyst etc.? Well I am not going to tell you the scopes of Statistics, well let's say it is a huge topic. Statistics is hidden everywhere. It is like that mom's touches of perfection in all your initial creation or like the sun ray silently making the moon bright. Hidden and very important. Anyways, we shall discuss that another time.  But today we shall discuss why each one of us needs to know the basic statistics. Statistics provides voice to numbers and helps them to tell their stories. It gives us an insight to see our prob...

Everyone is a born Statistician!

Every one of us is born with some innate talent, knowledge and instinct. And some are acquired. Statistics can be called an instinct of our subconscious mind which guides us and helps us to make decisions in our conscious state. An instinct is an innate or acquired, pattern of behaviour in animals . We humans have instincts as well such as fear of wild animals, fear of falling and many others. Statistics seems to be one of our innate instinct.  The basic of statistics is probability which is related to uncertainty. We can't foresee our future, thus our future is always led by uncertainty. And we have to make decisions in the face of those uncertainty by making proper analysis through our past observations and probability of occurrence in future.  Like the saying 'a burnt child dreads the fire'. We can take the child's burning experience as his/her past observation or in terms of data analysis, his/her train data. Since, he/she is only a child and might have faced only ...
