What does Statistics do? 

Statistics is a way which helps us to make decisions, predictions and interpretations.

Why Statistics?

"Why Statistics? I got it , I am a born Statistician and that much is necessary for my daily life, why do I need to know Statistics or anybody else should?"

Have these questions ever stuck your mind? Have you ever questioned this when you see all this craze about data scientist, data analyst, statistical analyst etc.?

Well I am not going to tell you the scopes of Statistics, well let's say it is a huge topic. Statistics is hidden everywhere. It is like that mom's touches of perfection in all your initial creation or like the sun ray silently making the moon bright. Hidden and very important.

Anyways, we shall discuss that another time. 

But today we shall discuss why each one of us needs to know the basic statistics.

Statistics provides voice to numbers and helps them to tell their stories. It gives us an insight to see our probable future and help us to make decisions based on facts. 

Statistics helps us to prove common sense.   So, instead of arguing with people you can prove it to them. Watching tv might have nothing to do with you having a leg ache but with statistics you can prove it to your mother.

Statistics helps us to make people hear our voice. You want to eat ice cream while your sibling wants a pastry. Simple, take votes of your family members. The team with votes more than the average wins. But if it is in your college mess, you might need pen and paper to do the calculations and draw the conclusion.

Statistics helps us to understand significance of a situation. You got a headache last night could be normal but having one every alternative day? Is it normal? How long is it normal? And when you need to consult a doctor can be understood through significance. Or we wouldn't have known that corona is dangerous or just like normal cold. Like some people without proper knowledge of statistics kept on denying the significance of corona.

"A single sheet of paper can't decide your future." But a collection of them surely can predict your future with varying probabilities and help you to hear your calling and choose what you are good at. 

It can also help you to decide which institution is best for your career, if you know what variables are to look at. Success story can be quite deceiving if you don't know Statistics.

In order to not get fooled by various advertisement and offers a good knowledge of statistics is a must.Numbers are innocent, if treated with proper knowledge they can reveal some useful secrets. Looking at numbers of units of sale of a company we can easily see how good actually the company is doing before you invest money or career in that. 

Don't be fooled by data visualization. Those can be quite misleading until you have good knowledge of it like scale taken to draw graphs. They can easily fool you in believing that the success rate of an institute is much better than the other through scale manipulation while in reality both might be producing almost same results. "9 out of 10 doctors recommend **** toothpaste." Was the doctors refering to brush every day with a toothpaste or particularly just this brand? What was the questionnaire? What was the population and sample size? What was the procedure?In order to protect yourself from fake news and fake advertisement, statistical knowledge is a must. 

Statistical knowledge helps you to understand what particular combination in your food or food item is harmful for you. You are falling sick after drinking milk at home but not when you drink elsewhere. With sufficient observation you can conclude that is it milk or the particular brand of milk you are drinking or it is something with your not so clean utensils?

Statistical knowledge helps us to make even small daily decisions as when to wake up for work, or when should one start getting ready or when should one leave, in order to avoid getting late. Appropriate knowledge of Statistics helps us to make these decisions.

There are many such examples which proves the importance of statistical knowledge. Statistical knowledge is must for your day to day work. Sometimes we do those calculations subconsciously while sometimes we need to have technical knowledge to deal with the problems.
